Déesse d'un rang inférieur, qui hantait les bois, les montagnes, les fleuves, la mer, les rivières. ⇒ dryade, hamadryade, naïade, napée, néréide, océanide, oréade. — Représentation plastique d'une nymphe, sous forme d'une jeune femme nue ou demi-nue. « les Satyres qu'on voit dans les jardins ravissant des Nymphes » (France).
♢ Par ext. Plaisant Jeune fille ou jeune femme, au corps gracieux. « une jeune nymphe de quinze ans » (Mme de Sévigné). — Loc. adj. Cuisse de nymphe émue : rose incarnadin.
2 ♦ Anat. Au plur. Petites lèvres de la vulve.
3 ♦ (1682; fig. du sens gr.) Zool. Deuxième stade (dit nymphal) de la métamorphose des insectes, intermédiaire entre la larve et l'imago. ⇒ nymphose. Nymphe de lépidoptère. ⇒ chrysalide.
